The first column graph illustrates how many American people were married and divorced between 1970 and 2000, with the second chart comparing marital status of adults in the USA in 1970 and 2000.

As is clear from the charts, over the given period the number of marriages was in decline, where divorce nearly unchanged, resulting worsening marital status of adult Americans.

For the first ten years, the number of married adults was the same, at 2, 5 million, meanwhile divorces increased nearly 50% from 1 million 1970 to just under 1,5 million in 1980. However, for the last two decades both marriages and divorces saw a decline, though at varying rates.

The most noticeable figure from the second bar chart is that percentage of married couples decreased by 10 % in2000 from 70 % in 1970. The figure for divorced and never married experienced deterioration, with the former nearly doubling, amounting to about 10 % in 2000 and the latter increasing to 20% at the same time. Though, the percentage of widowed adults decreased by some level for the given period.

SAMPLE ANSWER II

The first graph illustrates how marriage and divorce rate in the USA changed over a four decade period from 1970 to 2000 with the second bar chart indicating American adults’ marital status in two selected periods.

Overall, for the given years, while the number of marriages decreased, divorce rate saw some fluctuations in the middle decades and these changes caused the figure for married people to fall down.

As it can be seen from the data, even though the number of marriages stayed constant at 2.5 million for the first two decades, it experienced a downward trend from about 2.3 million to 2 million for the last 20 years. However, the pattern for divorce first rose by approximately half from 1 million in 1970 and then decreased for 3 consecutive decades, reaching 1970’s figure at the beginning of the 21 century.

Regarding marital status of adult Americans, it is noticeable that the percentages of never married and divorced people grew at different rates, amounting less than one-thirds of adults altogether in 2000.  This pattern is a complete reverse when it comes to the married and widowed where the former lowered by 10 percent from an all-time high of 70 percent in 1970 with the latter showing a marginal decrease of roughly 2 percent from 8 percent.
